It was actually my working title for my MULTIPLY SITE for 2010, but boredom and laziness struck me so I discontinued it. Well, anyway, using the two word "rational" and "cognizant," it means being reasonable or giving reason/s [rational] to a repertoire of knowledge [cognizant]. So expect an explosion of knowledge in my blog, whether trivial or timely issues. :D ENJOY
i am confronted with questions against my course of actions. it's not something negative, i know. but those are questions that challenges my integrity, not because i'm losing it - but because they care for me. it doesn't really matter actually and i appreciate their efforts to tell it straight to me. i know how they feel, i have to consider that, but i only ask for one thing - please trust the decisions i make.

they may be decisions that seems too inferior or derogatory to what i am really capable of. i thank those persons who showed their concern towards what they have heard. and to tell you honestly, all of what you have heard is TRUE. but let me put things straight as early as now. all i am after is the experience i am to gain with this endeavor. it doesn't matter where will i be assigned, it is completely ok with me. it is time to prove you that position does not solely dictate who you are, it's how you do something - how you execute and accomplish it - that's what really matters. i know i have the say to work on that task i was asked to do, but this time, let me be the follower instead of the leader. at times, i want to experience how it feels to be dictated with things to do. i want to know how it feels being commanded to do something.

the one i am really after is the experience i can derive from it. i may not be able to experience this again, it may be my first and last because of heavy academic loads, but i want to be proud that i was part of it. experience is more fulfilling than the recognition it could give me. i could use it as my stepping stone when it's my time to do the same thing, who knows? at least, my college life will be complete because i have, in a way, made it a point to participate in representing something bigger.

i was given the opportunity, and without any hesitation, grabbed it because envy or jealousy never crossed my mind for those who were chosen. it doesn't matter, and i am proud of them. all i wanted for you guys to do is give them chance because someone saw it in them. let's stop judging them, i am more than willing to lend a helping hand to guide them - not bragging about it but i am just being generous to share the things i know i can do.

if you were offended with the decision i have made, i am sorry but it's impossible to take it back. all i am after is the experience, not the pleasure and recognition. this will also serve as my opportunity to train myself to deal with greater pressure and of course, to broaden the spectrum of my abilities.

to all those who have shown concern, you just only proved me how blessed i am to have friends like you, guys. thank you very much. :)

let's keep it simple and humble, i am not bragging about anything, reading this one is based on how you interpret my words nor do i undermine, underestimate, question, or judge the courses of actions undertaken that brought up to this context. thank you.

peace.love.happiness.

I wish to share my masterpiece for the recently concluded English Festivities' Intercollegiate Essay Writing Contest. I did not garner any position to top the rest, but I know I have done great job to express my thoughts on the theme: "The Age-Long Tradition of Teaching and Learning English in the University." My gratitude goes to those who have entrusted me this worthwhile endeavor, Ms. Sheryl Sampang, the English coordinator of our college, my mentor. Although Ms. Regina Policarpio initially told me the news of my competition but was made a judge of the contest, I still thank her empowering me to do my best. To my ever-beloved and always on the lead H1, you are my bloodline that keeps me doing my best. Thank you! [Now that was melodramatic, don't you think? haha!]

HARBINGER OF LIGHT: ENGLISH IN THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS

“Has tenbrae cingunt mentis caligine terras hoc sancti thomae universtatis opus lumina pandit.” I remember this catchy Latin phrase at the back of the UST Central Library that Fr. Dela Rosa emphasized during the Paskuhan Mass last year. It was the homily’s message that affirms the university’s role as the beacon of Catholic faith throughout the centuries of its existence. “The darkness covers this land in mental mist: it is the task of the University of Santo Tomas to spread the light.” True to its obligation and oath to the nation and the church, our university never fails to fulfill its duty to dispel the shadow of ignorance that lingers in the society and to strengthen the moral fiber that binds us together. On its four hundredth year of existence, more than the prestige and grandeur for being an institution that witnessed the growth of our nation, our university is proud to reaffirm and redefine its role in the cultivation of wisdom in the light of the ideals of St. Thomas Aquinas and Bishop Miguel de Benavides. Initially as a school for priests, the university enjoys its title as one of the greatest institutions that bolster Christian teachings to inculcate in the minds and hearts of the faithful.

The university has been a witness to the evolution of educational systems worldwide. In the ancient times, education was primarily done to teach religion and promote traditions of the people [Richards and Rodgers, 1992]. Christian monasteries pioneered the teaching of language, grammar, and rhetoric.

Spreading the light is shunning ignorance and negligence in the society. Spreading the light is nurturing – to have better grasp of truths and tangible facts of realities about the world.

English is mandated by our law to be our second language. English has been part of our lives when the Thomasites brought with them their educational system to the country. The American educational system catapulted the multifaceted ingenuity of Filipinos in becoming one of the finest breeds of people in the world. Filipinos learning the language gives us edge in facing one of the daunting challenges for humanity: the unending pursuit for knowledge. English has grown to be the dominating language that the world knows to speak. As John Galsworthy puts it, “any impartial scrutiny made at this moment in time must place English at the head of all languages as most likely to become, in a natural, unforced way, the single intercommunicating language.” Nothing can stop the proliferation of English as the language that the majority speaks.

Teaching English is more likely to be associated to a travel agent selling an all-inclusive tour package of a certain destination. Having knowledge of the destination, itinerary, contact persons, and amenities are requisites to make a good sale of the package. This allows the agent to respond to the queries that your prospective clients might impose on them. Failing to anticipate would be tantamount to losing your market. There is no quick fix or formula in making a sale; it varies from one client to another. Teaching the language requires different approaches and methods. As early as the fifth century, a lot of approaches and methods have already been applied to effectively teach English. But one thing is common among them, that is, to improve their competence in the mastery of the language to communicate effectively. English plays a vital role in gaining understanding about the world. English serves as our passport to acquire knowledge that may not be available to everybody. English broadens our spectrum of possibilities. Although English has only come to the tongues of the Filipinos in the early 20th century, the University of Santo Tomas has already been the living edifice – more than the structure, but an established institution – of higher learning. Once the Department of Education, our university strived to educate the Spaniards and natives alike through the extensive and rarest collection of books, periodicals, and treasures that dates back from the 16th century. But more than treating them as treasuries, it speaks much of the goal of the university that sprang from the small collection of books of Bishop Miguel de Benavides – that education and knowledge is the most priceless possession that one can ever acquire; that one can never steal away from you.

It is in knowing that we learn to understand. It is not enough to have the knowledge, one should also learn how and when to use them - this is how to apply the knowledge you have acquired. It is not enough to sell an all-inclusive package with all the knowledge you have about it, it has to be worthy of the value that goes with it. The tour package should make your client elated because every centavo they invested is worth it! Teaching English has the same concern; it should tap on the needs of the learners for optimal development of the language. Optimal development would mean considering every aspect, and two of the most sensitive areas of English’s responsibility to teach are culture and religion. Let us face it, we have had enough of our world history’s grueling combats of men because of petty misunderstanding – or worse irrationality. Learning our history through one medium – from translation of texts from other languages to English - would improve our understanding of every single aspect of culture and religion; thereby, minimizing conflicts among nations and groups of people. The Abelams for one – an ethnic group from Papau New Guinea, yams are determinants of their culture. They follow a certain cycle of celebrations and rituals patterned from the planting, growing, and harvesting of yam. Yams dictate the social status of the Abelams in their society – the bigger yam you have, the more superior you are to others [Richard Scaglion]. Through the efforts of Richard Scaglion and the pool of anthropologists who made the study since the 70’s, one would gain cultural understanding of the ethnic group. Learning culture and religion through English bridges the gap that separates people from one another, the nexus of cultural and religious diversity.

Finally, in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, self-actualization is the end and ultimate need of human beings. To come into the full realization of our being, it is emphasized as our ‘need.’ Besides learning the respect of other culture and religion, our mastery of the language leads us to attainment of our coveted abilities and skills. Teaching English encourages us to do more and be more. It opens our eyes to a lot of possibilities and opportunities that are up for grabs. Mastering the language is definitely an ace to achieve our desires and dreams in life. English should also be taught to motivate the learners to excel more in their chosen craft. With the appropriate language competency skills, learners will never fail to come into the realization of their potentials. Is not it good to have the skills and abilities to chase your dreams? Does not it make you live in the dawn of your being? Does not it give the light of hope that illuminates your path towards the desires of your heart? Come to think of it, in merely learning the language, we already have the edge in becoming the person we ought to be. What the university celebrates this year is not just done overnight. It took our university four hundred persevering years to realize what it is good at. Through the efforts of the Thomasians, both past and present, we carry the light that continuously radiates the path towards nation building and social transformation. These are the abilities that our university possesses, the birthright and destiny that we shall hand down to future Thomasians.

“Light gives of itself freely, filling all available space. It does not seek anything in return; it asks not whether you are friend or foe. It gives of itself and is not thereby diminished,” stressed Michael Strassfeld. English in the University of Santo Tomas served as the benefactor of knowledge, nexus of culture and nations, and chrysalis of abilities that has spread lights into multitude minds of learners.

Yes, I am a great fan of Pinoy Big Brother. I find reality shows cool, I even scrutinized the issue about this show being “scripted.”

  1. Anung year nagsimula ang big brother franchise?
  4. Ano ang pangalan ng two set of Pinoy Teen Housemates sa Teen Clash of 2010?
(Season 2)
  7. Term coined by Mariel Rodriguez sa mga black ninjas that tested the First Batch of Celebrity Big Four?
  8. In relation to no. 7, sino ang unang dalawang black ninjas na hindi nagtagumpay nakawin ang golden eggs ng big four?
  10. Season with most number of finalists.

Famous Lines:

  1. “Ang respect, hindi yan ini-impose, Maricris, ini-earn ‘yan. And your age, act your age!”
  2. “Ano ka kurupot? Lahat na lang sa’yo big del!”
  3. “Best actress and best supporting actress in a pretending role!”
  4. “Kung lalabas po siya, sasama kaming lahat…hindi po siya makatarungan para sa akin. Hindi po talaga siya makatarungan na sunigin ang isang bagay! Anong lesson ang makukuha mo doon? Ano pong dahilan? Sumusunod po kami sa utos niyo pero pag-alam naming baluktot hindi kami papayag!”
  5. How many male winners are there?
Ano score mo?
1 - 5: Sige na, ako na adik sa PBB. haha!
6 - 10: Antagal mo sumagot, pero fair enough. Hirap maghanap sa net noh?
11 - 15: Hindi ako makakapayag na may pumapasa! :)) joke! Astig, may kasamahan pala ako! :D

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

First, I present to you the video that has broke the hearts of the Filipinos, again, after a popular Korean actress allegedly insulted the way we speak English – our second language!

Second, here’s the actress’s “tweet of apology” (I will fondly call it).

“First I'd like to give you my sincere apologies for what seems to be a misunderstanding.

It has come to my attention that many of you from the Philippines have posted comments protesting that i was being derisive by mimicking Filipinos when they speak English.

Therefore, in light of this matter I'd like to take this opportunity to clear the air.
In spite of what many people believe, I myself did NOT mention anything
about the Philippines or Filipino accent whilst on the TV show.

On the other hand I recall bringing up Southeast Asia and not the Philippines and the subtitles were inserted when the show was being edited of which I was not aware of until it was aired.

The TV show where this footage was taken from was designed to amuse its audience and my sole purpose was to entertain the viewers by coming up with lighthearted stories.

Since the producer knows that i speak English he asked me if I could
share any episodes that touch upon the English language.

As we all know every country has a typical accent when its people speak English (including myself) so after giving it some thought, I came up with a few lines where I simply tried to compare different English accents: the somewhat rigid British accent and beginners in Southeast Asia whose English tends to be a little hard-edged. No pun or ridicule was intended.

As an individual who use to take English classes over the phone with a Filipino instructor, I give you my word that even the mere thought of mocking Filipinos would never cross my mind.
I cannot tell you how much Filipino fans mean to me and as much as I love them, I would in no way
hurt or upset them.

I hope I have clarified any misunderstandings and once again I am truly sorry if I inadvertently
hurt anyone's feelings.

-i really love you, my Filipino fans..”

I am not a die-hard fan of any fancy Korean Pop Stars, I know a couple of Korean songs, and honestly, they really have fair skin complexion, haha!

The essence of this post is to decipher and find the congruency of the video with the contents of her “tweet of apology” (actually “Twitlonger of Apology”).

First I'd like to give you my sincere apologies for what seems to be a misunderstanding.

There’s nothing to be sincere about something that is clear and UNDERSTANDABLE in the video we have seen.

Yes, we are protesting because you were derisive! Yes, you did not mention that that’s how we, FILIPINOS SPEAK ENGLISH. But I would like to question your logic skill, it is very clear to you that you have to mimic the way we speak ENGLISH, the host of the show (the guy with glasses, I think) specially mention the way a “Filipino English teacher” speaks English; therefore, you have committed a logical fallacy, at the same time unethical impairment of “ignorance.”

On the other hand I recall bringing up Southeast Asia and not the Philippines and the subtitles were inserted when the show was being edited of which I was not aware of until it was aired.

This is to question the company, especially the show production team – I address this issue to you. It is clear to us that you intentionally meant the FILIPINO ENGLISH as your SKIT, you know, the funny part…

The TV show where this footage was taken from was designed to amuse its audience and my sole purpose was to entertain the viewers by coming up with lighthearted stories.

I agree that the show is meant to entertain and amuse its people, but of course, in the show business industry, one should be very careful with the words they broadcast. It might have been a parodical show that caters ‘lighthearted stories’ to its audience, but come on, would we protest if it has been too personal?

As I have said, an issue of negligence here. I think it was clear to you, Ms. Lee, that you have to mimic the FILIPINO ENGLISH as requested by the host of the show. Watch it again.

There you have it. For me, it’s an issue of negligence and ignorance.

Sometimes, there's an urge to just speak up.

PEACE!

Tracers is what we call ourselves! We were classmates for three years in High School!
"Tr" for Three/Thrice "Acers" for being in Section A (Well, really, there were no more pilot or cream section way back in our school). I am really honored to serve this class for three years as secretary (2nd year) and president (3rd-4th year). I LOVE YOU, GUYS!

Hindi man kami madalas nagkikita ngayon, it's safe to say that the stigma of being TRACER remains in our hearts!

I remember our Seal of Solidality, it is a large disk divided into 33 pieces (we were 32 in the class, plus our dear adviser), the Name "Tracers" is engraved in it and when we see each other, bringing those pieces, we form the disk as whole again! :)

Here's our class picture!

Ahh, this one! This picture really touched my heart, the picture closest to my heart. I can vividly remember when this happened. It was a thursday, break time, after our Industrial Arts time with Mr. George Testa at the Shop Room where we prepared our frames for our project! I like this picture a lot because it was the first we ALL ate together in one long table! I was really happy, the feeling was ecstatic! :)

"NGAYONG PASKO MAGNININGNING ANG PILIPINO"
ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID 2010

Ooohh......

I.
Kapiling ko mga bituin ngayong gabi
Mga ulap ang aking katabi
Ngunit hindi ako nag-iisa
„Pagkat ikaw ay nandito lang

Mga tala sa iyong mata’ aking batid
Bawat kislap ay may pag-ibig na hatid
Sa mga hangarin nating tapat
Kayang baguhin ang lahat

(Refrain)
Magagandang larawan ng ating bukas
Ngayong pasko’y magniningas

(Chorus)

(Bridge)
Sa hirap at ginhawa
Umiyak man o tumawa
Malayo o malapit
Tayo ay sama-sama

Tagumpay natin ay ipagdiwang
(ipagdiwang)
Wala nang panahon kundi ngayon
(ooohh oh oh oh)
(ooohh oh oh oh)

(Repeat Chorus 7x)

I stumbled upon this European singer in 2009, of course, through the internet, when I got curious who sang the song in one of my great friends debut. The song has catchy tempo and great lyrics. Then, nag-Limewire ako to check his songs, pero walang lumalabas. So I though, "Ah, low profile tong singer na ito, o kaya naman closed Euro singer." Kaya nag-youtube na lang ako. To my surprise, andami niyang song na nagustuhan ko:

Enjoy! :)

Chain letters are a complete and utter waste of time! As you say, maybe they will encourage people to pray, but what sort of praying are we talking about here – fear of the consequences that will be inflicted upon you by a supposedly loving God if you do not “pass it on?” There is a logical contradiction here in that God cannot be both loving and at the same time one who metes out punishment when someone does not “pass on” a chain letter.

When we pray, we ought to be praying out of our faith and trust in God! Yes, at times that can be lacking to a degree or we can be struggling with something in our faith, but this is not the same thing as acting out of fear. There is no satisfaction for a loving person to see someone relating to them out of fear! This is not true love.

God wants us to make a free choice when we relate to Him. He will pursue us out of Love for us, but He never seeks to force us to love Him out of fear. If someone emails/writes/call/wall post/tweet etc and asks you to freely choose to pray for a particular cause then feel free to do so, but also feel free not to do so! If the need is genuine, I am sure there will be something prompting us in our hearts, our conscience maybe, to be generous and send off a prayer or two regarding the particular intention. However, you will know when you are acting out of fear compared to when you’re acting under inspiration of your conscience; the difference has to do with our acting according to an understanding and experience of the duty of love – not out of fear.

Fear can be a motivating factor in some of the decisions we make, but it should never be the main motivation when it comes to our relationship with God. Let us seek to act out of our love, even the duty attached to love, but never out of fear that God will punish us if we do not do something or another. That sort of punishment is simply totally alien to the character of God.

Fr. Tynan MGL, Steve. “Should I Forward ‘Spiritual’ Chain Letters?”
      Kerygma Nov. 2007: 9.

I have always thought that chain letters have business motives behind it, pero kung “spiritual chain letters,” confusion starts to strike me. Siyempre, matter of faith and reason yan eh. Kaya, when I read this article, naliwanagan ako, it’s not the ‘act’ that makes it unnecessary, but the ‘purpose.’

So kung magpapasa man tayo ng mga chain messages, was it out of fear of misfortune or genuine inspiration drawn out of it?

Portrait of a Friend

I can't give solutions to all of life's problems, doubts, or fears. But I can listen to you, and together we can seek answers.

I can't change your past with all it's heartache and pain, nor the future with it's untold stories. But I can be there now when you need me to care.

I can't keep your feet from stumbling. I can only offer my hand that you may grasp it and not fall.

Your joys, triumphs, successes, and happiness are not mine. Yet I can share in your laughter and joy.

Your decisions in life are not mine to make, nor to judge. I can only support you, encourage you, and help you when you ask.

I can't give you boundaries which I have determined for you. But I can give you the room to change, room to grow, room to be yourself.

I can't keep your heart from breaking and hurting. But I can cry with you and help you pick up the pieces and put them back in place.

I can't tell you who you are. I can only love you and be your friend.

.............Author Unknown

I remember placing this poem in one of the music videos i have made for my dear Tracers. Come to think of it, it speaks of everything how a friend should be. Or better yet, how we should be to our friends. It's a good mode of reflection kung paano ba tayo sa friends natin. We shouldn't be forcing ourselves to become the 'super' friends we aren't. We shouldn't be superior among our circle of friends when you think you could be helpless as well. Mot importantly, dapat matuto tayong makinig kaysa dumakdak. Sabi nga ni Bob Ong, "Ang tenga kapag pinagdikit korteng puso... Extension ng puso ang tenga, kaya kapag marunog kang makinig, marunong kang magmahal" and Sr. Faustina Kowalska wrote in her diary, "Silence is a sword in the spiritual struggle. A talkative soul will never attain sanctity. The sword of silence will cut off everything that would like to cling to the soul. We are sensitive to words and quickly want to answer back, without taking any regard as to whether it is God's will that we should speak. A silent soul is strong; no adversities will harm it if it perseveres in silence. The silent soul is capable of attaining the closet union with God. It lives almost always under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. God works in a silent without hindrance. "
